The worst flood since 1929 has hit Pakistan
The worst flood since 1929 has hit Pakistan causing the death of an estimated 1,600 people, another 1300 injured and at least 14 million affected. The rains started between July 28th and July 30th. Since then the rains have been relentless over the last 3 weeks, hampering the distribution of aid to various communities and the evacuation of civilians. The flash floods have not only taken human life but also left considerable damage to property and livestock.
Gloucestershire Flood Recovery Scheme for Businesses
South West Regional Development Agency, in partnership with Gloucestershire First and Business Link, has provided up to £2m to assist the rapid recovery of businesses affected by the recent flooding, principally in Gloucestershire. The scheme is administered by Business Link who will send a Business Adviser to visit affected premises and give advice and support on business recovery.
Life line for GaZA
The terrible massacre aboard the Mavi Marmara on 31 May has brought a sea change in international opinion against the inhumane siege on the people of Gaza. Far from deterring people from seeking to bring that siege to an end, the Israeli assault on the Freedom Flotilla is spurring on even more people to bring humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and to end the blockade. Viva Palestina has organised three massive land convoys to Gaza in the last 18 months - all of which have delivered their aid - and participated in the latest flotilla. Over the last few weeks we have been discussing with partner organisations how to coordinate relief efforts by land and sea so as to have the maximum impact.
Haiti Earthquake Appeal
Haiti has been hit by a massive earthquake with devastating consequences. The New York Times, CNN, and The Times London are all reporting an estimate of at least 100,000 dead and more still to come. The pictures are shocking, leaving many to tears as the world is given photographic evidence of the pain and suffering. In these times of crisis it is up to everyone to come together and pool resources to help those in need. Yes, in a month's time the people of Haiti will most likely be forgotten by the media and push to the back of people's minds. But, for now we must stop the cynical nature and push forth a more humane view. So, what can you do to help?
